Flamenco dancers and live musicians on a stage.

The Spanish 4 and Spanish Culture classes traveled to DMACC in Newton on October 7 to enjoy a live performance by the dance company Hispanic Flamenco Ballet.

In preparation for the trip, both classes explored traditional Spanish dances that have been performed for centuries, from world-famous flamenco in southern Spain to lesser-known dances such as the jota. Students learned what to look for in each dance and even picked a favorite they hoped to see performed live.

The show took students on a journey through several Spanish cities, including Córdoba, Madrid, and Sevilla, with educational segments introducing each location followed by dances connected to its culture and traditions.

The highlight for many students was the opportunity to join the dancers onstage and try out some of the moves themselves! Our CAM students had a blast learning a few basic flamenco steps, as well as dancing along to the “Ketchup Song.”

All in all, it was a memorable experience that gave students a taste of Spain's rich culture, music, and history!
