Meals For The Heartland

On March 2nd the Meals for the Heartland organization came to the CAM high school, so that the CAM FFA members could take part in making meals by volunteering their time. Mike Franden is the event coordinator for the Meal for the Heartland. Mike has been a part of the Meals for the Heartland organization for nine years and has taken part of over 160 million meals. “I love what I’m doing and I’ve always wanted to help feed people and I get to do that on a daily basis.” stated Mike. Meals for the Heartland is a 5 in 1 three seed nonprofit organization that strives to end hunger one meal at a time. Through education, through learning, and through the process each bag will feed six people. One box has 36 bags which equals 216 meals.

Last year with COVID they were able to package 19 million meals with only a third of the volunteer support. Usually they would see 80,000 volunteers and make 20 to 21 million meals, but this year it's a fluctuating goal of 18 to 20 million meals. The CAM FFA filled 116 boxes which equals 25 thousand meals. The four ingredients are rice, soy, vitamins and vegetable mix. They then weigh the bags and put them in a heat sealer to persevere the meal. After sealing the bag the meal is safe to eat up to two years.

Over 90% of these meals will go overseas to a school lunch program and to orphanages. 95% will go to areas such as Haiti, South Africa, Guinea, the Philippines, Nigeria, Nicaragua, plus seven other countries. They also then keep about 1,000 meals for local food pantries. FFA chapters throughout the country have been a big part of helping the Meals for the Heartland, but they also have small schools from elementary to college, churches and other local businesses all over Iowa.  Mike states “It's the same process, but with different people with different callings.”
