Building a Path to Success

Building a Path to Success

By: Dominic Hershberger

The CAM high school has many classes and activities to explore, and woodworking/manufacturing is one of many. Known by some at the school as simply “Shop,” students can take advantage of the vast array of equipment that the class has to offer. Students can use a bandsaw, scroll saw, table saw, radial arm saw, miter saw, jointer, planer, router table, and a CNC machine on top of many other tools to make whatever cut they need to get the job done. The students can also enjoy the benefits of the SawStop table saw, which retracts its blade anytime it comes in contact with something such as your skin at a blazing speed; only taking 5 milliseconds. That’s 0.005 seconds, or 5 one thousandths of a second, which is 10 times faster than the airbag of a car. Safety precautions don’t stop there though, as anyone using the wide variety of tools is required to wear safety glasses/goggles, and they are required to learn how to use each machine and take a test about their knowledge of safety around the shop before they are allowed to start their projects. Due to COVID-19, some safety precautions have changed. Each student has been assigned their own personal pair of safety glasses, and the glasses are disinfected in a germicidal cabinet. Masks are also required in the shop. The projects that students work on can vary drastically. Tables, flags, dice, designs carved out by a CNC machine, chairs, benches, you name it, you can make it. However, projects have been somewhat limited by a multitude of things. Fires in California, hurricanes, derechos, and COVID-19, have all contributed to a shortage in dimensional lumber and panel boards. The price of such things has approximately doubled in cost in a relatively short period of time - only 8 months. While the prices of lumber have lowered slightly, it is still a limiting factor for the scale of projects, and bigger projects will have to wait.
