CAM Girls Putting Three Wins Under Their Belt

CAM Girls Putting Three Wins Under Their Belt

By: Zoey Baylor

The CAM girls basketball team had another successful game against Boyer Volley on Monday, December 1st. The CAM Cougars had confidence going into their first conference game due to their previous game against AHSTW. Starting off the game Zoey Baylor got the tip, but the Bulldogs snatched the ball and got the first point. Both teams had a slow start; the first quarter score was 13-11 with Boyer Valley up. Once the Cougars started getting into their rhythm, they were unstoppable. In the beginning of the second quarter Marissa Spieker hit a three and the Cougars defense kept the Bulldogs to only one shot. The CAM girls were on fire. The half time score was 32-25 the Cougars were up. The Cougars took control of the game in the third quarter outscoring Boyer Volley to the tune of 22 to 7. The teams traded baskets in the 4th quarter and the final was 62 to 41.

Junior for the CouGALs, Marissa Spieker led with 15 points and a freshman, Meredith Rich, following close behind with 12 points. Sophomore Reese Snyder contributed 11 points and freshman, Kiera Nichols also contributed eight points. Senior Zoey Baylor dominated on defense with 7 steals and 11 rebounds, but only giving seven points. Junior Mallory Behnken with 10 rebounds also put up four points for the night. Last but not least a senior, Molly Venteicher added another three points and a sophomore Naomi Grubbs with a solid 2 points.

The CAM girls assistant coach Brian Fogleman commented, “ Although we did not get off to a great start the girls did a good job of forcing Boyer Valley to play at our speed. By playing at a faster temp and limiting Boyer Valley to only one shot on most possessions, we were able to take command of the game. At the end of the day, our success will rely on doing the little things well. If we can buy into rebounding, communicating, and being good teammates we will continue to grow and have a chance to play deep into the season. We think it's important that our team continues to share the ball and not care who is scoring the points as long as we are taking good shots and keeping the gas pedal pushed down. This is a resilient group with all extra stuff going on related to COVID. We are excited to see if we can continue to grow and move in the right direction.”

The CAM Cougars played a fun game against West Harrison on Friday, December 4th. The Cougars won 78 to 22. Sophomore Reese Snyder had 17 points, and right behind her, freshman Eva Steffensen had 13 points. Senior Zoey Baylor, Sophomore Naomi Grubbs, and Freshman Kiera Nichols all had contributed eight points each. It was a very fun game because all 12 players had an opportunity to score at least one point!
