Regular Meeting

CAM Board of Education

Monday, January 13, 2020 6:30 p.m.

 

The CAM Community School District Board of Education held its regular meeting on January 13, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. in the Superintendent’s office at the CAM High School in Anita. Present were Directors Gary Dinkla, Chuck Kinzie, Mike Plagman, and Julie Williamson.  Director Nick Kauffman was absent.  Also present were Superintendent Paul Croghan, Principals Dominic Giegerich, Barry Bower, Larry Hunt, and Board Secretary, Lindsay Jahde. Principal James Brauer was absent. 

 

CONSENT AGENDA:  President Gary Dinkla read the mission statement, welcomed the visitors and called the meeting to order. Motion to approve the consent agenda consisting of the minutes of the December 9, 2019 regular board meeting, the January 6, 2020 board workshop, bills, applications to the Iowa Connections Academy received after the deadline, without good cause, or those denied because of lack of classroom space; as well as those denied due to inability to provide services, resignation of Lynn Johnson, H.S. Track Coach, and Volunteer Coaches, Bill Kragelund, H.S Girls’ Basketball, Steve Pelzer, H.S. Baseball, was made by Mike Plagman, seconded by Julie Williamson and carried on a 4-0 voice vote.  General Fund bills were $199,687.52, PPEL Fund bills $17,148.93, Nutrition Fund bills $13,990.17, SILO Fund bills $7,894.51 and Activity Fund bills $8,815.43.

CORRESPONDENCE:  None

 

ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS:  High School Principal, Dominic Giegerich shared that through work on the Self-Assessment of Multi-Tiered System of Support, the high school is going to pilot a 2nd tier intervention system in Math.  Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress results have identified Math as a focus area.  Spring curriculum review will focus on English and Social Studies. 

 

North Elementary Principal, Barry Bower shared that the elementary students celebrated positive behavior for the month of December.  Students selected received a special recognition for demonstrating the “Caring” character trait. CAM North Fifth Grade students collected over 200 items to be donated to the Iowa Children’s Hospital. CAM North Faculty and Staff participated in ACES training on January 8.  Professional Development on PBIS incorporates Cougar Coupons with weekly awards and special prizes given to students that exhibit excellent behavior. 

 

Superintendent Paul Croghan advised that the SIAC Committee met at 5:30 p.m. in the media center prior to the board meeting at 6:30 p.m.  A board workshop has been scheduled for January 20, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. in the Superintendent’s office.  Volunteer contracts were received for Bill Kragelund, girls’ basketball coach and Steve Pelzer, baseball coach.  Mr. Croghan advised we will be advertising for an assistant baseball coach due to the high participation numbers.  Modified supplemental amount of $161,038 for next year’s At-Risk/Drop-Out Prevention program will be used to pay for the school resource officer, a portion of guidance counselor’s salaries, the district’s at-risk programs and some elementary interventions. A proposed copier lease agreement will cover maintenance, toner, staples and 500 cases of paper for 2 colored and 1 black and white copiers for the district.  The proposed lease will reduce overall printing costs by $9,000 per year and move $26, 208 from the general fund to the SAVE fund.  Iowa Western Community College will allow CAM students the opportunity to enroll in College English courses in house as outlined in the education service agreement. The speech/debate department is requesting approval to an out of state tournament in Millard, NE.  The 2021 Washington D.C. Trip is in front of the board to approve dates so planning can begin. 

 

REQUEST FOR MSA FOR AT-RISK/DROPOUT PREVENTION:  A request for modified supplemental amount of $161,038 for at-risk/dropout prevention was approved on a motion by Chuck Kinzie, seconded by Julie Williamson and approved on a 4-0 voice vote.

 

COPIER LEASE:  The copier lease agreement with COUNSEL was approved on motion by Mike Plagman, seconded by Chuck Kinzie.and carried on a 4-0 voice vote. 

 

IOWA WESTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE EDUCATION SERVICE AGREEMENT:  The Iowa Western Community College Education Service Agreement was approved on a motion by Julie Williamson, seconded by Mike Plagman and carried on a 4-0 voice vote. 

 

SPEECH/DEBATE OUT OF STATE TRIP:  Attendance of the speech debate team at the tournament scheduled for February 21st and 22nd at Millard North High School in Millard, Nebraska was approved on motion by Chuck Kinze, seconded by Julie Williamson and carried on a 4-0 voice vote. 

 

2021 WASHINGTON D.C. TRIP:  A motion to approve the week of March 29, 2021 for the 2021 Washington D.C. trip was received by Julie Williamson, seconded by Mike Plagman and carried on a 4-0 voice vote. 

 

BOARD POLICY REVISIONS:  A motion from Mike Plagman, seconded by Julie Williamson to approve revisions, as presented, to board policy 100-102, 102.E2, 102.E3, 102.E4, 102.E5, 102.E6, 102.R1, 103, 103.R1, 104, 104R.1, 104.E1, 104.E2, 104,E3, and 105.  Motion carried on a 4-0 voice vote. 

 

RECOMMENDATION FROM SIAC COMMITTEE:  Chuck Kinzie made a motion to receive the following recommendations from the SAIC Committee and to take under advisement: 

 

  •  Include parents and teachers in motivating and connecting with students to make learning relevant to their lives in grades K-12. 
  • Continue collaboration and vertical alignment on curriculum and standards with grades above and below.

 

Julie Williamson seconded and motion carried on a 4-0 voice vote. 

 

 

BOARD REPORTS:  None

 

ADJOURNMENT:  The meeting was adjourned at 7:13 p.m. on a motion by Mike Plagman and seconded by Julie Williamson.  Motion carried unanimously 4-0.
