Read Across America- Read Across Iowa

Read Across Iowa

On Friday, March 1st, CAM South students celebrated Read Across America Day by “Reading Across Iowa”!  The teachers kicked off the day by presenting the ABC’s of Iowa.  Then students broke up into multi-aged groups to tour Iowa in various classrooms through reading and activities.  Fifth grade leaders did an awesome job of taking their groups from classroom to classroom.  The groups rotated through stations throughout the morning.  Kids visited Indianola, home of the Hot Air Balloon Festival, in the preschool room to learn about hot air balloons.  In the kindergarten room, students traveled to the Botanical Center and got to plant seeds.  The first grade room offered a Wells Blue Bunny ice cream social.  Students had to roll a dice to get a bowl, spoon, ice cream, and yummy toppings!  In the second grade room, travelers visited the Amana Colonies and got to design a quilt square.  Students visited Boone in the third grade room to learn about Iowa’s brave heroine Kate Shelley, and to construct a toothpick/gumdrop bridge that would support a train.  In the fourth grade room, the kids visited Dyersville home of the famous ‘Field of Dreams’.  Guest Jared Zimmerline did Mad Libs with students in the fifth grade room as they visited Iowa City, home of The Iowa Writing Center.  Pairs of students were photographed as the farm couple in Grant Wood’s American Gothic.  The fun day ended with the students enjoying popcorn and drinks as they watched “The Music Man”, based on a story by Iowa’s own Meredith Willson.
