CAM Board of Education

Monday, December 17, 2018 5:00 p.m.


The CAM Community School District Board of Education held its regular meeting on December 17, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. in the media center at the CAM High School in Anita. Present were Directors Gary Dinkla, Julie Williamson, Nick Kauffman, and Chuck Kinzie.  Also present were Superintendent Casey Berlau; Principal Dominc Giegerich, and Secretary Lindsay Jahde. Director Todd McKee was absent. Visitors in attendance were Shelly Miller, Grace Kopp, Mercedes Harris, Blair Wendt, and Ally Lung.


CONSENT AGENDA:  President Gary Dinkla read the mission statement, welcomed the visitors and called the meeting to order.  A motion to approve the agenda, the minutes of the November 19, 2018 meeting, bills, and financial statements was made by Chuck Kinzie, seconded by Nick Kauffman, and carried on a 4-0 voice vote.  General Fund bills were $59,669.73, Management Fund bills $15,308.00, SILO Fund bills $700.24, PPEL Fund bills $55,959.03, Nutrition Fund bills $15,037.43 and Activity Fund bills $10,053.42.


COMMUNICATIONS:  Information was shared regarding the IASB Advocacy events for 2019.  


DIRECTED WRITING CLASS PRESENTATION:  Shelly Miller and students shared information about a new website that they created that works hand-in-hand with publications through the Spy/Anita Tribune and the CAM Telegram/Atlantic News Telegraph.


TEACHER LEADERSHIP PROGRAM PRESENTATION:  Grace Kopp shared goals of the leadership program.  Two main focuses of the program include the promotion of collaboration to increase quality of instruction and to provide professional growth for teachers. Popular leadership topics include the use of projects and technology in the classroom.   


ADMINISTRATION REPORTS:  Principal Giegerich reported that an offer has been made and accepted for a High School Math teacher pending board approval. He advised the TLC program is a great opportunity for first year teacher with the support offered by mentors and principals.  He advised the digital media class and our business partner KJAN has been providing live coverage of our ballgames.    


Dr. Berlau reported that the “Every Student Succeeds” report card will be made public this week. He advised the district will now be required to code all school expenses by building. The district has already begun the process to convert the current coding system to track expense by building.  Western Specialty Contractors has nearly completed the work to the gym in Massena.  Radon testing was done in the south buildings.  Administration continues to work on a formal safety plan for the district. A tool to report unsafe or concerning situations is now available on the CAM website through the “green butterfly” tab. 


APPROVAL OF BID TO REPLACE LIGHTS AT SOUTH BUILDINGS:  A study to identify savings as the result of replacing lighting at the south buildings has been completed.  A proposal for the LED Retrofit was presented and included the savings identified in the study.  A rebate is also available through the utility company.  A motion to approve the bid was made by Chuck Kinzie, seconded by Julie Williamson and carried on a 4-0 voice vote. 


EARLY GRADUATION REQUEST:  A motion to approve the list of early graduates as presented from CAM High School and the Iowa Connections Academy was made by Chuck Kinzie, seconded by Julie Williamson and carried on a 4-0 voice vote. 


DISCUSSION ITEMS:  Dr. Berlau shared a worksheet showing current unspent balance as well as a forecast for future years.  He advised this will be a good tool to monitor our financial outlook on unspent balance. 


EARLY RETIREMENT INCENTIVE:  Discussion was held regarding options of early retirement and how they would play out going forward with our negotiation compensation model. 


OPEN ENROLLMENT APPLICATIONS:  Applications to Iowa Connections Academy received after the deadline, without good cause, or those denied because of lack of classroom space, were denied on a motion by Chuck Kinzie, seconded by Julie Williamson and carried on a 4-0 voice vote. 


RESIGNATIONS:  A motion to approve the resignation of Shana Platt, MS/S ELEM., Librarian, was made with regrets by Julie Williamson, seconded by Nick Kauffman and carried on a 4-0 voice vote. 


CONTRACTS:  A motion to approve a contract for Dan Daugherty, JH Boys Basketball Coach was made by Chuck Kinzie, seconded by Nick Kauffman and carried on a 4-0 voice vote.  A motion to approve the contract for Candy Schwan, H.S. Math Teacher was made by Chuck Kinzie, seconded by Julie Williamson and carried on a 4-0 voice vote. 


BOARD REPORTS:  Director Julie Williamson commented that she is proud of the job that the kids are doing with the online streaming.


ADJOURNMENT:  The Board adjourned on a motion by Chuck Kinzie and seconded by Nick Kauffman.  Motion carried unanimously on a voice vote 4-0.
