MINUTES

Regular Meeting

CAM Board of Education

Monday, December 18, 2017  6:30 p.m.

 

The CAM Community School District Board of Education held its regular meeting on December 18, 2017, at 6:32 p.m. in the media center at the CAM High School in Anita. Present were Directors Nick Kauffman, Chuck Kinzie, Julie Williamson, and Todd McKee (arrived at 6:40). Also present were Superintendent Casey Berlau, Principals Brian Fogleman, Dominic Giegerich, and Larry Hunt (arrived at 6:40), and Secretary Linda Edwards. Director Gary Dinkla and Principal James Brauer were absent. Visitors in attendance were Paul Upmeyer and Adam Warntjes.

 

CONSENT AGENDA:  President Pro Tem Chuck Kinzie read the mission statement, welcomed the visitors and called the meeting to order. Motion to approve the agenda was made by Nick Kauffman, seconded by Julie Williamson, and carried on a 3-0 voice vote.  A motion to approve the minutes of the November 20, 2017 meeting, bills, and financial statements was made by Nick Kauffman, seconded by Julie Williamson, and carried on a 3-0 voice vote.  General Fund bills were $68,022.03, Management Fund bills $18,025, PPEL Fund bills $8,834.79, Nutrition Fund bills $18,778.15, and Activity Fund bills $7,910.86.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS:  Principal Fogleman reported that the elementary students did a fine job at their concert.  Changes in behaviors of some students are visible before breaks and he discussed this with teachers.  Principal Giegerich reported that the performances by the high school students were great and the sound system worked very well.  The audience enjoyed the sing-a-long with the band and vocal students.  Scheduling for second semester is going well.  Driver education will begin January 4.

 

Superintendent Berlau had received Dr. Brauer’s board report and would forward this on to the Board.  Dr. Berlau and Gary Dinkla attended a meeting in Des Moines with the CEO of Connections Academy.  One of the things discussed was that the benefit for our students in taking courses through the Academy has not been something we have been able to take advantage of.  The district will be researching new math curriculum for K-12 students.

 

Todd McKee and Larry Hunt arrived at this time (6:40).  Principal Hunt reported on meetings he and Principal Fogleman had recently attended on literacy and interventions.  On November 30, 5th – 12th grade students attended presentations by Nate McLaren, a C&M graduate who is currently working with the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.  He spoke on cyber security and Internet safety.  Later that evening he gave a more in-depth presentation to parents.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:  Information was presented on the upcoming IASB Day on the Hill.

 

OPEN ENROLLMENT APPLICATIONS:  Applications to Iowa Connections Academy received after the deadline, without good cause, or those denied because of lack of classroom space, were denied on a motion by Nick Kauffman, seconded by Todd McKee, and carried on a 4-0 voice vote. 

 

RESIGNATIONS:  A resignation from Becky Stephenson, North Elementary cook, was accepted with regrets on a motion presented by Julie Williamson, seconded by Nick Kauffman, and carried on a 4-0 voice vote.

 

CONTRACT:  None.

 

IOWA SCHOOL REPORT CARD:  The Iowa School Report Card was released last week.  Districts and individual schools are rated on certain criteria.  Results for each building were discussed. This is available to view at http://reports.educateiowa.gov/schoolreportcard

 

EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK:  Changes will be made, sent out to the staff, and this will be an agenda item next month.

 

EARLY RETIREMENT INCENTIVE POLICY:  The early retirement incentive policy was discussed and it was decided to keep it as it has been for the last three years, where a licensed employee can submit an application and resignation and receive $1,000 with their last paycheck for turning in their resignation by February 15, 2018, effective by the end of the school year.  Approval of the application was made on a motion by Nick Kauffman, seconded by Julie Williamson, and carried on a 4-0 voice vote.

 

SEMESTER GRADUATES: A list of semester graduates from the Iowa Connections Academy was approved on a motion by Todd McKee, seconded by Nick Kauffman, and carried 4-0. 

 

CAPITAL PROJECTS: No update at this time.

 

VEHICLE SALE:  Three vehicles have been advertised for sale.  A bid for the 2004 Taurus was submitted by Charles Krause for $600 and was accepted on a motion by Todd McKee, seconded by Nick Kauffman, and carried on a 4-0 voice vote.  A bid for bus #5 was submitted by Gary Miller for $500 and was accepted on a motion by Todd McKee, seconded by Nick Kauffman, and carried on a 4-0 voice vote.  No bids were received for bus #A9.

 

WELLNESS COMMITTEE:  A list for the district’s Wellness Committee was presented and approved on a motion by Todd McKee, seconded by Nick Kauffman, and carried on a 4-0 voice vote.  The committee will review the wellness policy and evaluate the progress towards the goals.  Members of the committee are Sandy Booker, Jordan Aggen, Michele Williams, Clay Dorsey, Angie Baylor, Tami Williamson, Joe Wollum, Brian Fogleman, Dominic Giegerich, Larry Hunt, and Casey Berlau.

 

BOARD POLICY REVISIONS:  Revisions to board policies 405.4, 405.6, and 405.9 were made to remove reference to the Master Contract.  Motion to approve the revisions was made by Nick Kauffman, seconded by Todd McKee, and carried on a 4-0 voice vote.

 

BOARD POLICIES 408.1 – 409.4:  Board policies 408.2 and 408.3 were reviewed and approved as read.  Board policies 408.1, 409.1, 409.2, 409.3 and 409.4 will be revised and presented at the next board meeting.  Approval of reviewed policies was made on a motion by Todd McKee, seconded by Nick Kauffman, and carried on a 4-0 voice vote.

 

BOARD REPORTS:  Chuck Kinzie commented that the programs went very well and thought it nice that the audience was invited to join in.  Mr. Upmeyer is working with several students, training them on how to operate the sound system.  Todd McKee asked how the hiring for the cook position was going and Mr. Hunt replied that interviews are being conducted.  Dr. Berlau informed the Board that he and Chuck Kinzie will be interviewing applicants for the business manager/board secretary position on Thursday.

 

ADJOURNMENT:   The Board adjourned at 7:15 p.m. on a motion by Todd McKee and seconded by Nick Kauffman.  Motion carried unanimously on a voice vote 4-0.
