Second Chance Reading

Grading System

Second Chance Reading is in its second year at the CAM Middle School.  Mrs. Venteicher would like to remind students and parents of the grading system for this class.  First, 40% of the grade will come from the independent reading requirements.  The independent reading requirements are either 20 minutes of reading or 15 pages of reading each night, five times a week.  These requirements have been sent home and explained in detail to the students.  This is the only assignment given in the Second Chance Reading class.

Vocabulary is 15% of the grade.  The students will be given vocabulary words on Monday and tested on Friday.  They will make flash cards for each word and study throughout the week.  The vocabulary cards will be kept in an index card box in the classroom.

Fluency growth accounts for 10% of the grade.  The students will be given a fluency test two times a month. They will also be assessed on book talks done after the completion of each independent book read.   Nearly all students will gain in this area.

The students will receive 30% of their points from comprehension.  The Jamestown test will be given two times a month.  They are given 10 comprehension questions after reading a passage, which are worth 100 points.

The final 5% of the grade is behavior and attitude.  Students are expected to work together, listen to directions, and participate in discussion.  All these are considered when the students are given their weekly behavior and attitude score.

To be successful in Second Chance Reading (SCR), the students need to read.  The goal of SCR is to improve reading skills for improved performance in all academic areas.  Reading often is the key to success.  Reading 20 minutes (or 15 pages) each weekday is 40% of this grade!  Please help your child become successful.  This is a great opportunity for your child to improve.
