CAM’s 5th Grade Art Classes Carve Pumpkins

Shortly before Halloween, the Anita and C&M 5th grade art students carved pumpkins. I was amazed at how many of the students had never carved a pumpkin. Not only were they excited about the project for weeks in advance, but they were so curious about so many aspects of pumpkin. Many were surprised how many seeds were inside; they thought there would just be a couple. They were also surprised that pumpkin pie is made from the flesh not the seeds. When I showed up at the 5th grade classroom in Massena the day of the carving, ten year old Sumer Whipple said to me: “Ms. A, I have been dreaming of this day for over a week!” Needless to say, the pumpkin carving was a hit, so we’ll likely do it again next year.
